A few years ago we threw our mom a surprise vintage shabby chic luncheon for her 65th birthday.  We incorporated family heirlooms and delicious recipes to create a memorable day for her.  The party was inspired by Leigh Anne Wilkes over at Your Home Based Parties.  The menu consisted of a selection of appetizers including goat cheese balls, cucumber cups, and prosciutto-wrapped pineapple shrimp followed by tomato-basil parmesan soup and spinach salad with orange vinaigrette served in parmesan frico cups.  Next came a delicious assortment of sandwiches including California sandwiches, chicken pate, Stone Gable’s egg salad with cream cheese and herbs and orange poppyseed muffins with ham and honey mustard beehive butter also from Stone Gable.  Dessert included dipped marshmallows, cheesecake filled strawberries and a beautiful yellow ombre cake.

These beautiful vintage hankie invitations were the perfect way to set the stage for this pretty party.  They were so easy to make using reproduction hankies we found on Amazon.  Check out our tutorial here for the complete instructions.

For the decor, we made pinwheels out of scrapbook paper and used some to create the Happy 65th banner. Others were decorated with buttons belonging to our great-grandmother and placed in vases and jars.  We also made sure to include several pictures of our mom and our family through the years!

Some of our favorite inexpensive decor items were the lightbulb vases which we whipped out in a few hours.  Our dad finished them off by arranging flowers in them and hanging them from the ceiling around the buffet tables.

This party was so much fun to plan and put together.  We kept costs down by using what we had and although we did splurge a little on the food, we saved money by doing everything ourselves and enlisting some great friends who volunteered to help!
